On the 14th of July, the assembly repealed the ordinance passed in 2014 moving the municipal election to November to coincide with the state and federal elections. At the time the original change was passed, the stated goal was to increase voter turnout. This year’s assembly basically said trying to hold concurrent elections was too hard, and reset it back to the first Tuesday in April on a vote of 7 to 3. Demboski, Evans and Johnson voted no and Bill Starr recused himself.
A person who has served on the assembly for three consecutive terms may not be reelected to the assembly until one full term has intervened. A term is 3 years.
In April 2016 the following seats will be up for election:
Amy Demboski, Seat A, Eagle River
Ernie Hall, Seat D, West Anchorage
Dick Traini, Seat F, Midtown
Paul Honeman, Seat H, Muldoon
Seat J, South Anchorage (Jennifer Johnston is termed out and cannot run in 2016)
April 2017, 3 members have reached the term limit, Patrick Flynn, Downtown, Bill Starr, Eagle River, and Elvie Gray-Jackson, Midtown. These seats will be open.
Pete Petersen, Seat I, Muldoon
Tim Steele, Seat E, West Anchorage
Bill Evans, Seat K, South Anchorage
